ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Investigators are trying to figure out what caused a crane to buckle and send the Macy's Christmas tree crashing onto its roof at Lenox Square Mall.

No one was hurt, but the arm of the huge crane that originally hoisted the tree suffered severe damage.

Crews had tried the haul down the 60-foot pine from the department store's roof when the crane snapped, sending the massive tree crashing onto its side tearing a gaping hole on the roof over the men's department.

A spokeswoman said the men's store will remain closed indefinitely.

Crews eventually took down the tree Wednesday night and hauled away what remained of the ill-fated Christmas tree.

Adela Vizurraga works across the street from Macy's and saw the tree dangling three stories above the ground.

"It was crazy," Vizurraga said. "I was worried the tree was going to go down and hurt somebody."

It is the second time in two holiday seasons Macy's has had a tree mishap.

A tree snapped in November 2011 as workers tried to hoist it to the roof.

Vizurraga said, however, one downed tree will not scare her from shopping at Macy's .

"I'm going back there. It's safe now it's gone. The tree is gone," Vizurraga said.
