SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

U.S. Rep. Tim Scott will be sworn Wednesday in as South Carolina's new U.S. senator replacing Jim DeMint.

Gov. Nikki Haley appointed Scott who currently represents some of the Lowcountry to replace DeMint who resigned last month. DeMint is going on to be president of the Heritage Foundation - a conservative think tank in Washington D.C.

Primaries for Scott's open U.S. House seat will be held in March, with the election for the seat in May.

Filing is set to begin Jan. 18 and more than a dozen people have expressed interest, including former Gov. Mark Sanford and his ex-wife Jenny Sanford.
