Georgia's longest serving lawmaker dies

VIDALIA, GA (WTOC) -

Hugh Gillis, of Soperton, passed away peacefully Tuesday at Meadows Regional in Vidalia. His family was at his side.

Gillis was first elected to the state House in 1941. He would go on to serve a total of 56 years in the general assembly, including 44 in the state Senate. He left office in 2004.

Gillis was a key champion of technical colleges in Georgia. A building at Southeastern Tech was named in his honor almost exactly 10 years ago.

Senator Hugh Gillis was 94 years old.
