HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

A suspicious package was discovered Thursday in a Hilton Head neighborhood.

Beaufort County sheriff's deputies responded just after 10:15 a.m. to a report of a backpack containing suspicious materials found in a common area of Old Woodlands Plantation off of Island Drive. A resident told deputies that he had seen the backpack sitting on the ground Wednesday morning and noted that it was still there that night.

When he saw the bag was still there Thursday morning, he saw it contained various chemicals and other materials that he felt were suspicious, according to the BCSO. Deputies responded and immediately cordoned off the area.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad arrived and secured the backpack and its contents. The Hilton Head/Bluffton Hazmat Team remain at the scene to perform testing of the materials and further ensure no hazardous conditions are present.

Deputies re-opened Island Drive and access to Old Woodlands Plantation and surrounding businesses is being controlled. Only essential traffic is going through until the scene is fully cleared.
