Fort Pulaski remembers historic seizure

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Thursday marks 152 years since Georgia state militia forces seized Fort Pulaski, forcing the US Army to leave.

Throughout the month of January 1861, state troops around the south began seizing federal facilities.

Despite the dreary weather, Thursday's events included a guided fort tour, a musket firing demo and the raising of the Georgia Flag of Secession.

"We still like showing, despite the bad weather, war still went on. I fired the musket even through it was raining," said Wayne Roger, park ranger.

The Civil War officially started three months after the Fort Pulaski seizure.
