Teenagers rescued after getting lost in swamp

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Two teenagers got lost in a swamp area near Meldrim Thursday night.

According to the Effingham County Sheriff's Office, the teenagers went exploring, but became disoriented and ended up in a pond.

Deputies say they were clinging to a log when they called their uncle using a cell phone.

"I went out and started looking for them after calling 911. I have an air horn so I started blowing that," the boy's uncle Tony Beckworth said.

After a couple of hours, the teens were located safely and walked back to a command post where they were treated in an ambulance.

"They seem to be okay and are just cold. We're relieved everything is okay because anytime you hear about juveniles lost in the woods...it makes you worry," David Ehsanipoor with the Effingham County Sheriff's Office said.

The uncle says he told the teens to learn a lesson and not venture off the path again.
