For the second time in a week, a Red Cross Disaster Action Team serving Long County responded to a residential fire in Ludowici.
Ludowici-Long County fire crews were called out to a home on Sols Road in SE Ludowici around 3:45 a.m. Friday. The blaze left a 32-year-old mother and her two young children homeless. The mother reported waking up to the sound of a smoke detector and immediately ran outside the burning home, taking the 5 and 7 year old children with her.
Because the home was in a rural area, the fire department had to shuttle water to the scene.
No one was injured thanks to the mother's fast actions. The Red Cross has temporarily sheltered the family in a hotel, provided funds for food, clothing, a storage container and winter garments for all three.
Earlier in the week, fire damaged a home on Water Oak Lane in Ludowici, displacing a family of five that was headed out of town at the time, and claiming the life of their two cats. The home was not destroyed and the family was able to stay with a neighbor.
