Dozens flock to gun store after Loganville home invasion

WALTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Business is booming at The Trading Place Pawn and Indoor Gun Range in Monroe.

Walton County residents flocked to the business, especially after hearing about the home invasion in Loganville on Friday.

Officers have fielded numerous phone calls from people in that general area.

"The couple I had in here this morning ran into their neighbors," employee Justin Bupp said.

Investigators say Paul Slater pried his way into a home in the Henderson Ridge subdivision.

According to authorities, Slater used a crowbar to bust open three doors inside the home as he chased Melinda Herman and her two children.

Herman shot Slater five times with a hand gun as he entered the crawl space where they were hiding.

"Was there any relationship here between the intruder and the homeowner?" CBS Atlanta News reporter Adam Murphy asked.

"No sir, we haven't been able to show that there was any past history or anything at all that connects these people together," Capt. Greg Hall with the Walton County Sheriff's Office said.

Hall said Slater is in critical condition and the case is still under investigation.

Meanwhile neighbors are fearful.

"To have people come into this neighborhood is the first time and we've lived here since 2008.  We've never seen this," neighbor Vernon Rumphrey said.

It explains why so many living near the incident are considering firearms as a form of protection.

"The reality is that when someone breaks through your door a lot of times 911 is not going to get there in time so these people are concerned and they want to be able to defend themselves if it comes down to that," Bupp said.
