Georgia Power will be phasing out 15 coal and oil burning plants, including those in Chatham, Glynn and Putnam counties. They are citing the economy and the cost to meet environmental regulations.
"The most important thing of all is the company does not plan any layoffs. We plan to keep every employee that plans to stay with Georgia Power. This is a phases thing. We have a number of years to go before we get there but we think through attrition, and through relocation and transfers, all those jobs will still have a job," said Swann Seiler, Georgia Power.
Georgia Power says it will shut down the plants over the next two years.
