SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah crews responded to a sewage spill Monday at East 65th and Abercorn streets.

A blockage in the city sewer main caused a manhole to overflow, according to a city of Savannah news release. An estimated 875 gallons of sewage discharged into the the storm drainage system to Savannah River.

This amount classifies as a minor spill under Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

City Water and Sewer crews were notified of the spill at 9:22 a.m. Monday and the spill was corrected by 9:55 a.m.

The sewer main blockage was cleared and removed. Staff will install a high level wireless alarm to notify of future system surcharges, the release said.

State law requires the public be notified of all sewer spills.
