CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

The Chatham County Attorney's Office has confirmed that former Chatham County Coroner James Metts has returned extra money that was given to his office.

An audit uncovered reimbursements to the coroner's office for a secretary position that did not exist. Two weeks after Metts resigned, his wife wrote a check for $126,000 and then another for $15,000. The checks came with a letter explaining the money should cover those discrepancies discovered in the audit.

Metts resigned back in December. He served as coroner for more than 40 years.
