EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

On Tuesday, the Effingham Co.Sheriff's Office arrested Laperia Mydell, 23, of Rincon, the mother of a toddler who was hit by a vehicle on New Year's Eve night.

Mydell has been charged with cruelty to children in the 1st degree. The investigation revealed that the mother left her child Jordan Mydell, 3, alone in an apartment while she went shopping at a nearby gas station. The toddler got out of the apartment and ran across Ga. 21 near Goshen Rd., where he was struck by a vehicle traveling northbound. The vehicle left the scene.

" Investigators have been working on this case over the past 9 days but the investigation is far from over. There are two angles which have been looked at in this case, why and how the child was crossing Ga. 21 alone, and also attempting to identify the hit and run driver, " Sheriff's Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor said in a press release.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the hit and run. They are also asking for the public's help in identifying the driver and locating the vehicle. Police believe the suspect vehicle is a late 90s model Chevrolet Tahoe or GMC Suburban.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Effingham County Sheriff's Office at 912.754.3449. Mydell is currently being held in the Effingham Co. Jail.
