Some Beaufort County School District students will selected to participate in a pilot program that aims to increase their engineering knowledge and extend college credit.
The Island Packet reports that the school district is one of eight in South Carolina that will be participating in the Accelerate online learning program. The program is a partnership with the S.C. Governor's School for Science and Mathematics.
Four to six high school sophomores will be selected. To apply, students must fill out an online application. Semifinalists must participate in an interview and write an essay. The program involves two online classes pre-engineering and pre-calculus for engineers offered through Governor's School. Hands-on projects will be conducted over some weekends and the summer. The program will also include hands-on projects.
Those who finish the program will get one year's worth of college credit.
