SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Fourth- and fifth-graders at Heard Elementary Academy put their spelling skills to the test Wednesday.

WTOC's Sonny Dixon was there as part of a tradition WTOC and Heard have shared for well more than a decade. Students' family members were there to support contestants.

"Spelling helps out students - not only with their English - but with pronunciation of words. So as they learn the spelling rules and they encounter new vocabulary words that they're not familiar with, they can apply those rules and be able to decode those words," said Pamela Stevenson, assistant principal at Heard Elementary Academy.

The winner is fifth-grader Jordan Powell, who spelled the championship words, "enact" and "flora" correctly.

The runner up was fourth-grader Nevaeh Corbin. Jordan moves on to the district bee, which takes place Feb. 4. Nevaeh will participate as an alternate.
