Sheriff says bicyclist rode into path of semi

US 80 near the Chatham County line was closed in both directions Wednesday due to an accident involving a bicycle and a tractor-trailer. The road reopened around 8:30 p.m.

According to authorities, Doug Edwards, the cyclist, has life threatening injuries. Lifestar was called in to pick him up.

Effingham County Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie says Edwards rode into the path of a semi.

According to the Sheriff, there was nothing the semi driver could do to get out of the way.

"The big truck did everything he could to avoid the collision but by the time he saw him it was too late," McDuffie said.

According to McDuffie, investigators found beer near the bike and they believe Edwards may have been drunk.

Edwards is listed in critical condition at Memorial University Medical Center.

The investigation is ongoing.
