The .9 cents that consumers pay at the pump is being used to fund road improvements.
State Sen. Buddy Carter and the Georgia Department of Transportation presented the city of Savannah with a check for more than $1.05 million and Chatham County for more than $599,000 that will be used for road improvements.
Carter said it's good communication between local and state governments. "It's important to note the quickness, how quickly this happened. The County approved this project December 21st, and here we are Jan. 10 check in hand, so I'm real proud of the state and the DOT in that respect," he said.
Two projects for the county are already in the works. One is traffic light improvements to Montgomery Cross Road and Sallie Mood Drive, the other is other project, a new light on President Street and Walstrom Road.
So as soon as the Chatham County engineer cashes that check, expect to see some construction in those areas.
