ELLAVILE, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
An arrest has been made in the death of Jasmine Benjamin, 17, a Valdosta State University student who was killed in November 2012.
Darien Joseph Meheux, 18, turned himself in to the Schley County Sheriff's Office and was arrested on Thursday, according to John Bankhead with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Meheux was the ex-boyfriend of Benjamin, according to a private investigator hired by Benjamin's family.
Officers with the GBI, the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office, Valdosta State University police and Valdosta police searched extensively for Meheux in Gwinnett County, since he is from Lawrenceville, but then he turned up in Ellaville.
Meheux turned himself in after finding out that a murder warrant had been put out for his arrest.
Benjamin's body was found in a dorm on Valdosta State University's campus. The GBI said she was strangled to death.
Following the announcement of the arrest on Friday, James Jackson, Jasmine Benjamin's stepfather, issued a statement on behalf of his family:
"We would like to thank the GBI and the Valdosta Police on the arrest of Darien Mehuex. We are grateful for everyone's prayers and concerns, and ask at this time that everyone respect the family's privacy."
