A standoff has ended at a home at the Westwood Heights subdivision after SWAT members went into a home.

According to authorities, the suspect is dead. He was shot by the SWAT team when he came out on the porch with a gun. The female was taken to Memorial. She was conscious and speaking, according to authorities.

"The suspect did come outside and show a weapon. At that time, a swat officer was forced to fire a weapon and the suspect is deceased," David Ehsanipoor with the Effingham County Sheriff's Office said.

Residents had been evacuated due to the hostage situation occurring at a home on Whitehall Avenue in Rincon. Deputies went door to door asking residents to evacuate.

Effingham County Sheriff's Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor told WTOC that a man was barricaded inside the attic of a home with an assault rifle and that a female was also inside.

Deputies and hostage negotiators were at the scene. A hostage negotiator with Savannah-Chatham Metro Police and SCMPD SWAT also responded, but more SWAT members were called in.

"We are looking into a possible connection in Savannah, but we are not 100 percent sure on that yet so we have not confirmed names of who's in there yet," Ehsanipoor said.

A witness, Shanee Walker, told WTOC that she saw the couple before the standoff. She said they offered the couple a ride. She said the man seemed very agitated. He told her the ribs of the woman he was with were broken and for them not to worry about it. Walker said the injured woman looked like she was in a lot of pain and that the man was walking far ahead of her.

"That's why we offered them a ride because it didn't look right," Walker said. She said she didn't see any rifle or other actions. She said the standoff began 20 minutes after that.

A large part of the subdivision is closed. More than 75 officers responded. The sheriff's office, Georgia State Patrol, Rincon police responded. Firefighters have a staging area set up along Highway 21.
