Felton "Duck" BrewtonCLAXTON, GA (WTOC) -
If anyone in Evans County doesn't know Felton Brewton, they've heard of Duck. A sheriff's deputy for 26 years in his hometown, he's carried the nickname since childhood for his distinctive quack-like laugh.
But his past few months haven't been humorous. On ongoing battle with Crohn's disease led doctors to place him on dialysis six months ago.
"This illness had gotten me so sick before dialysis started, it's disappointing that I hadn't been able to work like I always have," he explained.
Co-workers and the community share his sadness.
"Everybody's concerned. Every church in the county I've been to has him on their prayer list," said Sheriff Randall Tippins. "We're busted up over it and everybody wants to help Duck."
On Feb. 1, two days before Super Bowl Sunday, friends have organized a Boston butt sale. Lee Smith and Harry's BBQ will be cooking them.
"I was on board in two seconds when I heard the idea," Smith said. "Duck's always been supportive of everybody and he's coached rec department teams too."
Brewton said the support from so many people has been inspiring.
"It is uplifting to know I have so many friends willing to help me. That's a blessing!"
Brewton is also on a list for a kidney transplant. Proceeds from the Boston butt sale will go to help him with medical expenses. The Evans Co. Sheriff's Office is selling Boston butt tickets during normal business hours at the Evans Co. Courthouse. The phone number is 912.739.1611.
