Folks remember Savannah State University professor
Dr. Hanes Walton Jr.
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
Former students, community leaders, local political leaders and other joined together for a vigil Friday morning for Dr. Hanes Walton Jr., who passed away on Jan. 8 in Michigan.
Dr. Walton was a professor of political science at Savannah State University for a number of years. Organizers say he influenced the lives of many leaders in Savannah through his teachings at Savannah State.
"As we share with folks, when we talk about the Hall of Fame at Savannah State University, we have the names such as Maj. Richard R. Wright, Cyrus G. Wiley, Benjamin Hubert, James Colton and Hanes Walton Jr. There is no one that had a greater impact on Savannah State University and the nation, other than our first president, than Hanes Walton Jr.," said Jamal Toure, vigil organizer.
