Violent crime calls in the lowcountry are on the rise. According to officials, 933 violent crime calls came into the Beaufort Co. Dispatch Center during 2012. That number is up from 841 calls in 2011. Violent crimes include homicides, rape, aggravated assault and robbery.
Sheriff P.J. Tanner says the call numbers do not paint an accurate picture of crime. He says deputies went to 380,000 calls in 2012 but only 578 of them were actually related to violent crimes.
The county is working to buy new computer software to produce more accurate statistics.
