SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. celebrated a once in a lifetime milestone, their 100th anniversary.

Hundreds of members and supporters packed St. Phillip A.M.E. Church for Founders Day Sunday.  As the sorority looked back on its past, they took time out to honor the founders, 22 young ladies who were students at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Back in 1913, they formed the organization as a way of promoting academic excellence and  assisting people in need. Today's members dressed in period costumes to represent the founders.

Less than 2 months after the group formed, the founders  courageously joined  in the women's suffrage march in Washington, D.C. in 1913.

Through their community outreach and mentoring programs, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is truly a sisterhood called to serve that has transformed many lives and has impacted countless communities around the world, our nation and right here at home. Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson is among its more than 200,000 distinguished members.
