Effingham Co. murder suspect and family had violent past

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Effingham investigators wrapped up their work at the Whitehall Ave. home Monday, but many questions remain about the events there.

"Moretz was obviously a sick man," David Ehsanipoor, Effingham County Sheriff's Office, said.

Deputies say Chad Moretz dismembered Charlie Ray's body. With the help of his wife and brother, they say he put most of Ray in a storage locker in South Carolina, but they found his head in the Rincon home's attic.

"We don't know why the other body part would be left in the house. It is obviously open for speculation. We don't know if it was a trophy for him," Ehsanipoor said.

Investigators say Moretz has a history of disturbing activity.

Domestic violence and terroristic threats are documented and also a brutal attack to a neighbor's dog.

"He pulled out a knife and actually cut the dog open and the dog was later put down at a vet clinic," Ehsanipoor said.

Violence seems to run in the Moretz family.

Chad's father Jeffrey gunned down his wife of 36 years in Florida nearly two years ago and then turned the gun on himself.

The wife was dating a man police say mutilated and killed another woman.

For Charlie Ray's friends, the sordid picture is too much to take in.

"I think they are sick. Maybe he went off his meds, he is crazy. I don't know how you explain this to anyone," said Megan Edgerly, friend.

Others are concerned for Ray's family.

"It is unreal to think something like this would happen to such a great family. It is so heartbreaking. Charlie didn't deserve to go like this. Charlie deserved the best," said Michael Kearney, friend.

A funeral for Ray was scheduled for Wednesday, but postponed by the family.
