Swimming Championship Worth Millions to Local Economy

It's a first, and should mean big business for a pretty popular place, and the rest of the city. Savannah has been chosen to host the United States Masters Swimming national championship. The meet is planned for next month at the Chatham County Aquatic Center and is expected to bring thousands of people the Coastal Empire.

Over 1,000 national caliber swimmers will gather August 12 through 15. While there, not only will they splash in our pool, they'll also eat in our restaurants and stay in our hotels, to the tune of an estimated $2.5 million of economic impact.

Area swimmers will take their places in the pool beside the best swimmers in America from ages 18 up.

"Short term, it'll have a bigger impact than the G-8," said Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA Dist. 1). Congressman Kingston is a sponsor of the event but will not himself don a Speedo and join the fray at the championships.
