An Evans County jury will decide whether Claxton's mayor defrauded his health insurance providers when he claimed injury benefits from 2004 to 2006.
Luther Royal stands trial on insurance fraud charges brought by a special state prosecutor on behalf of the insurance company. Royal made the 17 claims over a fall he suffered in 2002. The prosecutors presented copies of the claims Royal filed. In the statements, Royal claimed he could not lift anything over 20 to 25 pounds and could not sit or drive for long periods of time, therefore he could not work at his refrigeration equipment business.
Because Royal is an elected official, he could possibly be removed from office if convicted. That would be determined depending on what type of sentence Judge Robert Russell invoked. The case is expected to wrap up by Friday.
