The Effingham County Sheriff's Office said 18-year-old Christian Cowan died by drowning. Cowan was one of two 18 year olds in a Honda Civic that crashed on Rincon-Stillwell Road.
Deputies say Cowan was not wearing his seat belt. Investigators say the civic was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed - the driver lost control at Bodaford Curve, hit a steep embankment and overturned the car. Cowan was ejected out of the car into standing water.
Travis Williams, 18, was air lifted to Memorial University Medical Center. Deputies say he suffered facial fractures, injured knees and some broken ribs. He is expected to be OK.
Investigators still don't know who was driving the car at the time of the crash.
Friends told WTOC the two Effingham County High School seniors were best friends and inseparable.
The visitation for Cowan will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday. Both will take place at the First Baptist Church of Rincon at 400 Columbia Street between Fifth and Sixth streets.
