EVANS CO., GA (WTOC) -
An Evans County jury on Friday found Claxton's mayor not guilty on all
counts in insurance fraud trial.
Luther Royal was on trial on charges that he defrauded his health insurance
providers when he claimed injury benefits from 2004 to 2006.
Insurance fraud charges were brought against Royal by a special state
prosecutor on behalf of the insurance company. Royal made the 17 claims over a
fall he suffered in 2002. Prosecutors presented copies of the claims Royal
filed.
In the statements, Royal claimed he could not lift anything over 20 to 25
pounds and could not sit or drive for long periods of time, therefore he could
not work at his refrigeration equipment business.
