Guyton fire displaces disabled Veteran's family

An early morning fire destroyed a wood frame home in Effingham county and displaced a family of four.

"It was a fast fire," said Willie Holland.

Relatives say Retired Veteran Patrick Holland and his wife were sleeping inside the home when they got a nudge that would save their lives.

"The dog kept nudging her to get her up," said Patsy Holland. "She was thinking, he was wanting to get out to bathroom, that is when they saw the smoke and he threw the dresser through the window and threw him and his wife out the window."

Two children, ages 9 and 4 also lived in the house but thankfully spent the night at their grandparents

"Thank god I had the children at my house instead of being here," said Holland. "So there was no one home, but the mom and dad and they went out of the window."

"I was scared to run down here, because I knew the nephews kids were in the house," said Willie Holland. "There were flames all the way to top of the trees."

The intense early morning fire destroyed the wooden frame home and scorched their car leaving the Guyton family without a home or means of transportation

"It is devastating," said Holland. "I lived in this house for 40 years, so it is terrible. You think of all the things that could have happened, but thankfully everyone got out safe, except the pets and they would have, if they could have saved them."

The Red Cross gave the family somewhere to stay, some food and clothing. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined by fire officials.
