SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
Monday marks the
national bicentennial anniversary of the birth of the father of the Emancipation
Proclamation and Savannah native John C. Fremont.
The Fremont Civics Organization credits Fremont for President
Abraham Lincoln's push to end slavery.
"As many people know, Lincoln was not sold on
ending slavery. He was even willing to let the south possibly keep slaves. Fremont
was the individual who literally led Lincoln to adopting a better cause to end
slavery," said Aleq Boyle, member of the Fremont Civic Organization.
This February is the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation
Proclamation.
The Fremont Civics Organization will host a national
toast event in Fremont's honor at 7 p.m. at the Westin Resort Harbor property.
