Fewer teachers are advancing their education, the Island Packet reports.
Data show teachers aren't going for a national board certification. Four years ago, nearly 800 South Carolina teachers went the extra mile to get the certification.
Last year, that number was down to less than 300. Education officials blame cuts in bonuses for certified teachers and the financial assistance to get there. South Carolina has more than 47,000 teachers and now fewer than 20 percent are certified.
