Tybee council asks residents to not intervene with coyotes - WTOC-TV: Savannah, Beaufort, SC, News, Weather & Sports

Tybee Island continues to fight coyote problem

TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -

On Tuesday morning, DPW crews found the carcass of one of the island coyotes in the dunes off of 18 St. and Strand. It is unknown who gunned down the animal, there are only reports of gunfire that happened around 2 a.m.

"I think we're all aware we have no idea who did it. Obviously, we would like to do it under our own control with the tranquilizer gun and do it as humanly as possible. I don't think we have any leads. We probably aren't going to peruse it much further.  It would be very difficult to actually figure out who did it" said Bill Garbett, Tybee Island City Council.

The city did approve the purchase of a $1,000 tranquilizer gun and traps last week. There are rumored to be multiple coyotes that inhabit Tybee and the city does plan to use the gun and traps once they arrive. In the mean time, the city and authorities stress that residents do not hunt or target these animals on their own accord.
