Statesboro's sweetest race to benefit homeless

Posted: Updated:

Chocolate isn't often associated with road races. But organizers of Statesboro's Chocolate Run 5k have promised plenty of chocolate Feb. 23 for its runners. The race is organized and hosted by the chamber of commerce's 2013 Leadership Bulloch class. It benefits the Open Hearts Community Mission.

"The mission is a joint effort among local churches to help the homeless," explained founder Delia Mobley. "Since we started in August 2011, we've housed 311 people. That's certainly more people than many would suspect in this community."

The mission currently uses local hotels to give homeless individuals or families a short term place to stay until they can make arrangements.

"To that extent, it has been expensive to pay hotel costs and its been harder to save money to begin a building of our own," Mobley stated.

She said the organization is in negotiations for a property on which they could build a shelter. The 5k race will help with some of the initial costs.

"Leadership Bulloch has been so wonderful in putting this together and getting sponsors and getting people excited ," she added.
