ATLANTA (WTOC) -
The
Savannah area unemployment rate increased in December to 8.2 percent, that's up
five-tenths of a percentage point from 7.7 percent in November.
The
Georgia Department of Labor released its data Thursday. The December rate is
still lower than the December 2011 unemployment rate of 8.7 percent.
A
small increase in first-time jobless claims and more people searching
for work were
the reasons for the increase, according to the labor department.
Construction,
manufacturing, trade, transportation, warehousing, accommodations and food services
saw 39 more new claims, according to the DOL.
Those
employed or actively searching for a job, increased by 1,411, from 179,537 to
180,948 in December.
Georgia's
seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased to 8.6 percent in December, up
one-tenth of a percentage point from 8.5 percent in November. The rate was 9.4
percent in December a year ago.
