Commissioners to vote on microchipping measure

Big changes could be coming for pet owners.

Chatham County Commissioner Helen Stone told WTOC that the commission is looking at a law that would require all cats and dogs to be spayed or neutered.

The law would also require owners to get their pets microchipped, but it would only apply to folks living in unincorporated parts of the county. This is how the commission hopes to cut down on the number of feral cats and abandoned dogs. Commissioners will vote on the proposal Friday morning.

Stone said animal breeders who register with the U.S. Department of Agriculture would be exempt.
