SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Franklin Joseph Alexander, a 47-year-old homeless man with a history as a sex offender, was taken into custody Jan. 19 after attacking several officers at a downtown hotel.

Alexander punched or headbutted three officers with the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department and a Georgia State trooper whose gun he had taken before his arrest.

Alexander has been charged with aggravated assault, two felony and one misdemeanor count of obstruction of a law enforcement officer, interference with government property, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and criminal trespass.

The trooper was working off-duty at the hotel when he noticed Alexander looking at pornography on a hotel computer in the lobby and ordered him to leave the building.

Instead of leaving, Alexander struck the trooper and took his service firearm, which was secured by a bystander as the officer and suspect struggled.

Downtown Precinct patrol officers arrived at the hotel to aid the trooper. While attempting to place handcuff on Alexander, they were punched and one received a headbutt.

After Alexander was arrested, he told officers he would have shot the trooper.

Alexander has a history of arrests by SCMPD since he was released from Valdosta State Prison in August 2011, where he served two years of an eight year sentence for sexual exploitation of a child.
