SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Some are still questioning the numbers regarding crime statistics released by Savannah-Chatham Metro Police in early January.

The statistics showed crime being down in the county, but some commissioners say those numbers were fixed by officers discouraging people to file reports, or filing reports with less severe charges.

"I'm amazed that that would be alleged," Maj. Larry Branson said. "I can't say that it didn't happen, but I have no knowledge about it."

Branson said he's never heard of anything like that happening in his 26 years of experience in law enforcement. He says the department is taking the claims serious.

"We want to know about these specific cases when someone is saying that we aren't filing reports. We need to know about it," he said.

The department is working with one person who said their complaint wasn't filed. Branson said that is the only person that has contacted them about an issue.

"We're talking to that person, and we're finding out what officers were involved," he said.

County commissioners are also taking the claims seriously, and they want to hear directly from Chief Willie Lovett.
