Komodo dragons hatch at Memphis Zoo

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The Memphis Zoo has gotten some recent additions with the hatchings of several Komodo dragons.

The baby reptiles aren't exactly cute and cuddly though. Chris Baker, who is assistant curator of reptiles at the zoo, told The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/SI9vm4) that they will bite as soon as they hatch. Baker said in the wild, they would have to protect themselves from being eaten by their mother.

It is the third time in just more than a year that the zoo has bred the endangered species. It joins fewer than 20 other zoos across the nation that have successfully bred Komodo dragons.

Baker says other zoos have spoken for the creatures, and it is unclear whether they will be exhibited before moving in a couple of months.
