Explosion Closes Savannah Intersection

An explosion rocked a large garbage container this morning at 63rd and Montgomery Streets in Savannah, while a sanitation worker was in the process of emptying it. Neighbors in the area felt and heard the explosion. Several homes in the area have been evacuated.

The Red Cross has set up a shelter for evacuated residents at Pulaski Elementary School.

Montgomery Street between 61st and 65th Streets is expected to remain closed until further notice while Savannah-Chatham police, the GBI, the Army, and the ATF investigate. Officials are still trying to determine what caused the explosion, which heavily damaged the sanitation truck.

Authorities have found 20mm shell casings, and what appears to be military ordinance, on scene.

No one was injured in the blast.

WTOC has crews on the scene and will have the latest in a live report on THE News at 5.
