Dominique Ford, 26, of Garden City, was taken into custody after he and his 2-year-old daughter De'Kiiyah Roper were shot during a domestic dispute in a west Savannah apartment Monday morning.
Ford was treated at Memorial University Medical Center along with his daughter after West Chatham Precinct officers found him walking away from the scene with the child. The wounds were non-life threatening.
Around 11:45 a.m., Savannah-Chatham Metro Police were called to the Westlake Apartments on reports of a shooting of a man and a child. Police found that Ford had climbed out of a window with the child and was walking through a wooded area with the child. Ford has been charged with aggravated assault.
Violent Crimes detectives determined that Ford entered the residence to retrieve a gun and a struggle between him and Dennaysha Roper, 21, the child's mother and resident of the apartment, took place.
Roper was able to get the gun away from Ford and fired once, striking him. Ford then picked up the child before Roper fired again.
"This doesn't really surprise me. This complex is not a safe place for children. There is always more than one side to a story," neighbor Angelique Venadle said.
Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division are continuing to investigate.
