Some new opportunities are coming to Savannah Chatham County Public School System, in the form of expansion and charter schools.
An addition to New Hampstead High School will be complete by Feb. 15. Superintendent Dr. Thomas Lockamy says now, the school will be ready to occupy the entire building.
The district also plans to open two new, free public charter schools. Tybee Island Maritime Academy and Savannah Classical Academy will both open next fall.
Both Beach High School and Bartlett Middle School will be expanding as well. Beach will have a new medical academy on campus in conjunction with Mercer University, and Bartlett will have a STEM curriculum consisting of science, technology, engineering and math.
Dr. Lockamy says all of these options are crucial for students to be able to find what career paths suit them best.
"Whether it's the law and criminal justice academy at Savannah High School, or its the medical program at Beach, the Visual and Performing Arts Academy at SAA, whatever the families may choose to have if they wish to have a specialty we provide it for them."
