Crystal Williams, 31, was shot in front of her apartment on West Park St. just before 9 p.m. Tuesday. Investigators say they were called to the area after neighbors reported hearing several shots fired. When they arrived, they found Williams suffering from a gunshot wound.
"She lives not far from here. From what we understand, her friends and family were on the stoop of the porch of her house talking like normal and apparently someone drove by and shot at the group, out of the vehicle, and she was hit," said West Broad Street YMCA director Peter Doliber.
The news comes as a shock to Doliber. Williams was known to volunteer at the West Broad Street YMCA with her mother, who recently died from stomach cancer.
"It's awful. We care for her tremendously. She has been a volunteer here when her mother worked here," said Doliber. "She was here a lot with her mom. We know her well. We just went through the burial of her mom, who was very young, only 58. It is very difficult. Violence is not necessary. It is senseless. There is no need for it. We are praying for the family."
Williams was taken to Memorial to be treated for a non-life-threatening wound. Currently, police have not released a description of the suspect or suspects, or a description of the car.
