Employees and customers are preparing to mark a milestone in local banking. In February, Farmers and Merchants Bank of Statesboro will celebrate its 65th birthday.
The bank initially started in the nearby Bulloch County town of Brooklet, but expanded to Statesboro and now features four locations in the county. Bank officials announced open houses and give aways at each location during the month and a cash drawing at the end of February. They plan to celebrate what they said is becoming a rare milestone as more small banks eventually sell out to larger groups.
"Community banks are important to communities and the economy," said president Brett Morgan. "We are now the only locally owned bank in Statesboro and Bulloch County."
