After a little bit of a delay thanks to the fiscal cliff crisis, the IRS is now officially accepting 2012 tax returns. Jan. 30 is considered Free File Day.
Free File Day is a service that offers free federal tax preparation and e-file options for all taxpayers using fillable tax forms. This is an effort by members of the Free File Alliance including TurboTax, H&R Block, TaxACT and Jackson Hewitt. IRS officials suggest this is the best option for anyone making more than $57,000 per year.
For those making less than $57,000 per year, the City of Savannah is offering free income tax assistance at 12 different locations throughout the area.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Coordinator Tenique Gadson said the service is invaluable to the community.
"There's a way to get their taxes prepared absolutely free. I mean it doesn't cost to prepare taxes, and people can take advantage of that by going online and doing them free, but everyone is not computer sufficient to do that. So, we've partnered with the IRS to offer this service and to make sure people take advantage of the earned income tax credit."
