Albany Tech to offer two-year nursing degree

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany Technical College will launch a new Associate of Science in Nursing Program with an LPN-RN Bridge, which will begin this fall term.

Albany Tech has been given provisional approval by the Georgia Board of Nurses to accept students into its new Associate of Science Nursing program for the fall semester 2013. The program is designed to meet the needs of the community by complimenting Albany Tech's existing nursing program.

Students will be able to complete their nursing career choice by one of two tracks - the traditional path and the LPN-RN bridge path.

Doctor Anthony Parker say, "This gives them the opportunity to be able to stay on their current job, go to school, contribute to their families but also an opportunity to begin an RN bridge program. So this is the first step of the first rung, [it] gives them an opportunity to make more money after graduation but gives them an opportunity to keep going to earn additional degrees and contribute at a higher level.

"There has been a tremendous response from the community wanting to get information on the admissions/entrance requirements," said Mattie Buchannon, Dean of the Health Care Technology division at Albany Technical College. "Our program is designed to assist those interested persons to pursue their goals of becoming a Registered Nurse. We built our program based on some of the successful models that we have seen, while not destroying the goals of any entity in our region."

"We are excited to help alleviate the nursing shortage and health disparities in our community by providing well-trained registered nurses," said Schvon Bussey, MSN, ARNP, FNP-C, Program Chair for the new program at Albany Tech. Albany Tech has submitted a prospectus by its accrediting board, to the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), on this program and anticipates approval within the next few months.

Lenekia McKnight is the Director of Nursing  Education Research says, "We would hope that all the potential candidates would be interested in applying and pursuing their career at Phoebe Putney.

Tina Shead recently graduated from Albany Tech says she is excited to able to continue her education where it started.

"I am very excited that Albany Tech is going to start an LPN to RN bridge program. It really makes me feel good to know that the school that I just recently graduated from now I have the opportunity to come back and pursue my career as a registered nurse."

Shead says there are many opportunities for registered nurses and that is one of the things that drew her to the career.

"Its a very secure feeling cause that way I know that no matter where I go if for some reason I decide to move to another location or if I want to stay here there is always going to be a job waiting for me as soon as I graduate."

Albany Tech expects to have about 20 students in the fall semester and eventually 35 to 40 students and if you want to apply the deadline approaching.

"If anyone is interested please apply now we'll have a lot of applications but we want to consider yours" says Dr. Parker.

You can start applying on February 4th.

The traditional track for the program will be six semesters. Albany Tech will begin taking applications for both tracks now with students beginning the program fall term 2013. Students who are interested can contact Schvon Bussey at sbussey@albanytech.edu or call 229.430.3698 or visit www.albanytech.edu for more information regarding application, registration, and program requirements.

Relaxing outside this Father's Day afternoon? Showers and thunderstorms will continue drifting across the Coastal Empire and Low Country into the early evening hours. Since these storms aren't moving fast, you can expect water to collect on roadways if you're caught under a downpour. The good news is that we will be much drier by sunset, meaning your dinner grilling plans are still a go!
