Savannah Chatham Day may be associated with shrimp, oysters and other coastal favorites but community leaders say it's more about the dialogue that happens before, during, and after the dinner.
More than 100 community members made the trip to the Atlanta for the annual event. It included committee meetings in the morning and a two hour discussion with leaders like Gov. Nathan Deal, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, state agency commissioners and Chatham County's state senators and representatives. The town hall-type meeting was moderated by WTOC's Sonny Dixon.
In that meeting, Gov. Deal pledged the State of Georgia would use bonds to raise part of the money needed to deepen the Port of Savannah.
"The whole idea is to show our lawmakers how much we appreciate them and how much we need them," explained Savannah mayor Edna Jackson.
The event is hosted by the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce and other sponsors.
