Should sheriff candidates be forced to specify a party?

Posted: Updated:
EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

When you vote for a sheriff or county commissioner, do you want to know whether they are Republican or Democrat?

A new bill could do away with partisan affiliations for certain offices.

Effingham County Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie says he agrees with the proposal and doesn't think it matters whether a sheriff is Democrat of Republican.

"You cannot separate out because of party. I'm tired of hearing Republicans and Democrats. It's time we get back to the American people. It doesn't matter what party you are, Americans are Americans," Sheriff McDuffie said.

There is no decision yet whether to take the party affiliations off the ballot.

McDuffie says the Georgia Sheriff's Association still hasn't decided which side of the law they will support.
