OKATIE, SC (WTOC) -

The Lowcountry Coalition Against Human Trafficking met in Okatie Friday to celebrate the passing of the states new human trafficking law.

The coalition spent a year trying to get the law passed, and now that it has been, prosecutors can start investigating claims.

The new law is completely different than the old one. According to Daniel Brownstien, the old law was useless.

"It didn't clearly define what human trafficking was," Brownstien said.

The new law does.

"It also allows us to create a state task force that can develop a strategy to investigate cases and help victims move forward with their lives," he said.

The coalition will meet periodically through out the year to decide how to move forward with the new law at a state and local level.
