Former South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford is running for Tim Scott's congressional seat. On Monday, he made his first campaign appearance in the Lowcountry, where some voters are past his scandal.
They said he's the right person for the job because his track record speaks volumes.
"He has fiscal credentials that are second to none in terms of cutting spending, reducing taxes, and reforming entitlements," Beaufort County State Representative Tom Davis said. "He's walked the walk and I think he's the person to send up to DC."
This is Sanford's first attempt at running for public office since the 2009 affair that tainted his image and ruined his political career.
"He deserves a second chance. He did a lot of good things as governor," said Jerry Sheridan, Sun City. "Like when he gave senior citizens a tax exemption with the school taxes."
Sanford is running against 16 republicans for the primary. If he wins on March 19, he will go on to face on of the three democrats in the general election.
Whoever wins that election won't have much time to settle in because Scott's term ends in 2014. Whoever takes his seat will need to get right back to campaigning again.
