Sheriff McDuffie praises law enforcement in Alabama
EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -
Many praised law enforcement Monday for saving 5 year old Ethan in Alabama.
While officials there weren't commenting extensively on their efforts, Effingham County Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie did shed some light on the situation.
He has an interesting perspective because of the hostage situation in Effingham County last month.
"It is extremely tense. You have decisions to make that hold people's lives in your hands," Sheriff McDuffie said.
McDuffie says he has been watching the situation closely as it unfolded in Alabama. He says it was a complicated situation for law enforcement, especially because there was a child involved.
"You've got a guy who has proven that he does not mind shooting people because he already shot the bus driver. He is in a bunker below ground. If you rush in there and don't do things the right way, you could have an active shooter situation where children and officers can get hurt," Sheriff McDuffie said.
McDuffie is also a trained hostage negotiator and says the key is gaining the suspect's trust.
With the limited information he has on the situation, McDuffie says waiting until the right moment to move in was the right plan.
