HHI fire officials look at fining for false alarms

Posted: Updated:

It costs money to roll the fire trucks out, and false alarms might even keep them from a real emergency.

Hilton Head Fire and Rescue is considering fining repeat offenders.

The department responded to more than 700 false alarms last year, according to fire chief Lavarn Lucas.

"That number varies from year to year," Lucas said. "It's been has many as almost 1,000."

When the department arrives to the scene, they discover that the alarm was malfunctioning. The owner of the home or business is told to get their alarms fixed, but Lucas say some of them don't.

"We got to some repeatedly because the responsible party doesn't want to take care of them," he said.

Some residents are up, but Lucas wants them to know that nothing is official yet.

"What we have is a plan that we put together, and this is one of those plans," he said.

The plan will go to Hilton Head Town Council for a vote. If it is approved by the council, Lucas said it will take up to a year before it goes into effect.
